The "Do One Thing Well" Dogma
For decades, the undisputed gospel of Silicon Valley was focus.
Investors and advisors preached that early-stage startups must find a tiny, specific niche—a wedge—and execute it flawlessly. "Do one thing better than anyone else." If you built an HR payroll tool, you shouldn't try to build a laptop management tool at the same time. You would spread your engineering resources too thin and get crushed by focused competitors.
This resulted in a massive proliferation of "point solutions." A typical 100-person company in 2016 used Gusto for payroll, Okta for password management, Jamf to manage employee laptops, and Expensify for expenses.
The problem? None of these systems talked to each other. When an employee was hired, the HR manager had to manually enter their data into ten different systems. When an employee was fired, IT had to race to manually revoke their access across dozens of apps to prevent a security breach.
Parker Conrad’s Heresy
Parker Conrad (who had previously founded and been ousted from Zenefits) realized that the "do one thing well" dogma was actually creating a miserable experience for the buyer.
He founded Rippling in 2016 with a heretical thesis: The Compound Startup.
Rippling did not build one product. They built a core Employee Graph (a single database of truth about every employee) and simultaneously launched a massive suite of apps on top of it: Payroll, Benefits Administration, Device Management (MDM), App Provisioning (SSO), and Expense Management.

By building everything at once, Rippling offered something no point solution could match: Deep interoperability.
The Power of the Core Identity Graph
Because Rippling was the system of record for the employee's core identity, the automation was magical.
When a company hired a new software engineer in Austin, Texas, the HR manager simply clicked "Hire" in Rippling. Automatically:
- The employee was added to payroll and their Texas state taxes were calculated.
- A new Macbook Pro was automatically ordered, configured with the company's security software, and shipped to their Austin address.
- The employee was automatically granted single-sign-on (SSO) access to GitHub, Slack, and AWS, but restricted from accessing Salesforce.
If the employee was terminated, one click revoked everything instantly.
The Moat of Integration
Rippling's individual apps (like their applicant tracking system or their expense manager) were rarely "best in class" compared to dedicated point solutions.
But it didn't matter. The value of the integration far outweighed the value of specific feature sets. A CFO would happily accept a slightly less robust expense tool if it meant they didn't have to spend three days a month manually reconciling data between their HR platform and their accounting software.
By building a compound startup, Rippling created a product that became harder and harder to rip out. If you leave a point solution, you just replace one tool. If you leave Rippling, you have to replace your entire HR, IT, and Finance stack simultaneously.
