The Digital Paper Metaphor
For thirty years, productivity software was trapped in a physical metaphor. Microsoft Word and Google Docs were essentially digital pieces of paper (8.5x11 inches, complete with margins). Evernote and OneNote were digital filing cabinets with digital folders holding digital notes.
This metaphor was easy for humans to understand during the transition to computers in the 1990s, but it was deeply limiting for modern knowledge work.
If you had a list of customer feedback in a Google Doc, it was static text. If you wanted to filter it, sort it, or assign it to an engineer, you had to copy it into a Google Sheet or Jira. Information was siloed based on the format of the file.

Notion's founder, Ivan Zhao, abandoned the "digital paper" metaphor entirely.
He realized that modern software development relies on object-oriented programming, where objects have properties and can interact with one another. Why shouldn't consumer software work the same way?

Because every piece of content is an independent database object (a block), they can be rearranged seamlessly. You can drag a paragraph of text and drop it into a database cell. You can turn a bulleted list into a toggle heading with a single click.
The Relational Database Disguised as a Doc
The true genius of Notion's block architecture was revealed when they introduced Databases.
Unlike a spreadsheet, which is just a grid of dumb text cells, a Notion database is a collection of relational objects. Every row in a Notion database is itself a full Notion page.
This meant a product manager could write a feature spec (a document) that lived inside a sprint tracker (a database), which was relationally linked to a bug tracker (another database).
Notion successfully tricked non-technical business users into building complex, relational databases. They gave marketers and designers the power of SQL, disguised behind a beautiful, minimalist, drag-and-drop interface.
The Viral Template Ecosystem
Because Notion workspaces were built with Lego-like blocks, they were inherently shareable and reproducible.
Notion leaned heavily into this by allowing users to publish their workspaces as "Templates." A massive cottage industry emerged. Productivity influencers on YouTube began selling custom Notion templates for "Life Tracking," "Startup Fundraising," or "Content Calendars."
Notion didn't have to spend millions on outbound marketing. Their users were doing it for them, sharing functional mini-applications built entirely out of Notion blocks.
