The successful transition to high-performance native apps unlocked Facebook's ability to seamlessly integrate in-feed mobile advertising. Because the apps were fast and engaging, users spent exponentially more time within them, creating massive new inventory for native ads that felt organic to the feed. The revenue engine ignited. Within a few short years, mobile advertising went from zero to generating the vast majority of the company's multi-billion dollar quarterly earnings. The HTML5 disaster became a foundational lesson in product management: never sacrifice user experience on the altar of engineering convenience.
