Entering the AI IDE War Third
You are the founder of a YC-backed AI IDE startup. 9 months in, ~$400K ARR, 18 customers, a tight 6-person team. Cursor is the category leader (~$500M ARR, $9B valuation). Windsurf is the closest competitor with a different agentic angle.
Your product is technically excellent — your prompt routing is arguably better than Cursor's. But Cursor has 20x your team and 100x your distribution. Your investors are asking pointed questions about positioning. Your next milestone is the Series A, which requires a clear narrative.
The team is split: half want to compete directly with Cursor on general-purpose AI IDE; half want to pivot to a vertical.
The principle: In a category with two dominant players and an open frontier, the third entrant has to pick either a sharper wedge or a sharper audience — not a better version of what the leaders are doing. "Better AI IDE" is not a strategy when Cursor and Windsurf already exist.
